AirPods are one of my favorite Apple product ever, ranking only behind the iPhone 3G and iPhone X. These headphones are my go-to option whenever I want to listen to some music or watch a movie in peace.
There is a slight problem with these, and other Bluetooth headphones, as there is no easy way to tell how much juice is left. Well, thanks to the included Apple H1 (AirPods Pro and AirPods 2) or W1 (AirPods 1) chip, the seamless pairing with other Apple products makes life easier.
Today, we’re going to take a look at how you can keep an eye on your battery life throughout the day. These methods will show you how to track AirPods battery life on your iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, and even Android.
How do I check the AirPod battery status on my iPhone or iPad?
Apple nailed the integration with iOS and AirPods on the head. Connecting the two products is the easiest process for any Bluetooth headset that I have ever used.
Once these products sync together, you’ll want to know how to keep an eye on the battery level. Apple has included a few different methods on the iPhone
Open the AirPods Case Lid
After your AirPods have been synced for the first time, then you will see a pop-up every time the lid opens. When the case opens, the dialog box will show the battery life of your AirPods, along with the charging case.

If one AirPod is at a different battery percentage than the other, then that will be reflected upon accordingly. Of course, closing the lid or taking the AirPods out will make this screen go away, or you can tap outside of the box.
Use the battery widget to see left and right charge status
Another method for you to keep track of the battery life of your AirPods is the “Batteries” widget. This feature lives on your widgets page whenever you swipe to the left-most screen.
With the Batteries widget on your iOS device, your AirPods case charge appears only when at least one AirPod is inside the case.
However, the widget is not there by default, so here are the steps you need to take:
- Unlock your iPhone
- Swipe to the left-most screen
- Scroll down and tap Edit
- Find Battery and toggle it on
Not seeing left or right AirPod battery information?
If the widget only shows your combined AirPods’ charge, place one AirPod back in the AirPods case. Almost immediately, the widget should update with battery information for both the Left and Right AirPods AND the AirPod case.
Not seeing AirPod case battery status?
Since the AirPods case doesn’t currently have Bluetooth, you need to place at least one AirPod inside to see the case’s battery percentage.
Ask Siri to check your AirPods’ battery
The final way to check the battery life of AirPods on your iPhone is with the help of Siri. Just say out loud “Hey Siri” and ask “How’s the battery on my AirPods today?”
Siri responds with the amount of battery remaining in your AirPods so you can keep the music pumping.
AirPods Pro and AirPods 2 also offer a hands-free “Hey Siri” mode, making it a lot easier to reach Siri!
Just set-up your AirPods 2 for “Hey Siri” and then ask her anything you want (well, almost anything!)
How do I check the AirPod battery level on my Apple Watch?
For the unaware, Apple also made it possible for you to pair your AirPods with the Apple Watch. This feature is convenient for those with the LTE-enabled AW3 for phone calls, but you can also listen to music.
If you left your phone at home or in a locker at the gym, you’d need to know how much juice is left. Luckily, there is a quick and easy way to check the AirPods battery life on your Apple Watch.
All you need to do is swipe up from the bottom of your Apple Watch. This action opens Control Center, and you can tap the battery widget in the top left-hand corner.
From there, you will see the battery life of your Apple Watch, with the connected AirPods listed below.
How do I check the AirPod battery charge level on my Mac?
On the Apple front, the last product you may need to check the battery life of your AirPods is the Mac. After these have been paired, there is a pretty easy way to tell.
All you will need to do is click the Bluetooth symbol in the menu bar of your Mac. Take your cursor, highlight the AirPods, and then there will be a sub-menu that shows you all of this information.
This menu will give you the ability to disconnect, along with showing the left and right AirPods battery. You can even see the remaining battery of the AirPods case if you need to know whether it’s time for a charge.
How do I check the charge on Apple AirPods using Android?
The funny thing about AirPods is that everyone wants a set, or wants something similar. However, these headphones are so great that even Android users want to get some.
Since these are from Apple, you can’t check the battery level of your AirPods on your Android device out of the box. So this means that you will need to make use of a third-party app from the Play Store.
There are quite a few different options to choose from, but our pick would be AirBattery. Part of the reason for this selection is for compatibility with Beats headphones that sport the same H1/W1 chip.
The app is free to download, although it does include a few ads. However, there are in-app purchases if you want to get rid of those ads.
AirBattery works pretty seamlessly, as you can see the battery level for both Airpods and the accompanying case. However, seeing the case battery life is only possible when one of the AirPods is inserted.
Perhaps the most exciting feature of AirBattery is the In-Ear detection for a myriad of streaming services. These include Netflix, Apple Music, Google Play Music, and Spotify.
If AirBattery doesn’t work for you, here are some of our other choices:
How to see your Left, Right, and the Airpods Case current battery status?
If you aren’t seeing the separate battery status for your left and right AirPod, go to the battery widget and then try leaving or putting one in the case and one in your ear.
The battery widget should immediately update with Left, Right, and Case information.
Keep your AirPods charged!
Since the AirPods case holds multiple AND full charges for your AirPods, it’s a best practice to put your AirPods back in the case when you’re not using them.

Check battery usage
To see an overview of your battery level and activity for the last 24 hours and up to the last 10 days, go to Settings > Battery.
When you tap one of the columns on your screen, you can see which apps contributed to your battery usage during that time period, and the proportion of battery used for the app.
To see how long each app was in use on screen or in the background, tap Show Activity. Under each app, you might see these usage types:
- Background Activity means that your battery was used while the app was doing something in the background.
- Audio means that apps play audio while running in the background.
- No Cell Coverage and Low Signal means that your device is searching for a signal or being used with a low signal.
- Backup & Restore indicates that your device has been backing up to iCloud or restoring from an iCloud backup.
- Connected to Charger means the app was used only when your device was charging.
You can also see when your device was last connected to a charger and the last charge level.
Adjust settings to improve battery life
While viewing your battery usage, you might get a suggestion like Enable Auto-Brightness or Adjust Display Brightness. This is because the software determined that changing these settings could improve your battery life.

Use Low Power Mode
If you want to extend the battery life on your iPhone, turn on Low Power Mode. This reduces power consumption until you turn it off or charge your iPhone to 80%. When Low Power Mode is on, certain settings and features like app updates, downloads of new TV shows or podcast episodes, mail fetch, and some visual effects such as True Tone are reduced or disabled.
